We’re going to show you how to adjust your Disney+ data usage for every device.
How to Control Data Usage on Disney+
By default, Disney+ automatically sets the quality so that your stream runs with minimum buffering. On some devices, the highest quality is 4K UHD—Disney+ wins over Netflix here, since you don’t pay extra for that. However, you can manually alter this to always use more or less data. The less data you use, the lower the visual and audio quality of the stream.
Importantly, manually setting stream quality doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive it, since it also depends on your device capabilities and internet connection. For example, if you don’t have a surround sound system, you’ll gain no benefit from the 5.1 audio offered by the higher quality setting.
Finally, these data settings apply per device and impact all profiles on the account. As such, if you stream Disney+ on multiple devices, you’ll need to adjust the settings for each.
How to Set Your Disney+ Data Settings on Mobile
Setting your data settings from a mobile device is easy and it’s a great way to improve your Disney+ mobile experience. All you need to do is follow the steps below.
In the Disney+ app, tap your profile picture in the lower-right. Tap App settings. If desired, enable Stream over Wi-Fi only. Select Wi-Fi data usage and select Automatic (uses more data, highest HD quality possible, 5. 1 surround sound, 2GB/hour) or Save data (uses less data, SD quality, stereo sound, 0. 6GB/hour). When done, go back. Select Mobile data usage and select Automatic or Save data. This isn’t relevant if you only stream over Wi-Fi.
How to Set Your Disney+ Data Settings on Smart TV (or TV Connected Devices)
Follow the steps below to tweak your Disney+ data settings on a smart TV or devices you connect to the TV.
On the Disney+ homepage, navigate left to open the menu. Select Settings. Select App settings. Select Automatic (uses more data, highest quality possible up to 4K UHD, Dolby Atmos sound, 7. 7GB/hour), Moderate (uses less data, HD quality, 5. 1 surround sound, 2GB/hour), or Save data (least amount of data, SD quality, stereo sound, 0. 7GB/hour).
How to Set Your Disney+ Data Settings on Web
If you watch Disney+ on your computer, you can change your data settings from there too:
On the Disney+ homepage, hover your profile picture in the upper-right. Click App settings. Select Automatic (uses more data, highest quality possible up to 4K UHD, stereo sound, 4. 2GB/hour), Moderate (uses less data, HD quality, stereo sound, 1. 2GB/hour), or Save data (least amount of data, SD quality, stereo sound, 0. 6GB/hour). Click Save.
Download Shows and Movies to Save More Data
Using these settings, you can ensure that Disney+ doesn’t drain your data—vital if you have capped data plans that charge you for exceeding the limit.
If you want to save more data, try downloading shows and movies to your mobile device. This means you can stream without using data, perfect for when you’re away from home and without Wi-Fi.
